SBHS Athletic Director Nan Verkaik Moving to Teaching Position

SANTA BARBARA - Nan Verkaik, currently serving as Santa Barbara High's athletic director, will be returning to the classroom fulltime.

It is anticipated that Ms. Verkaik will teach physical education and video production classes.

Principal John Becchio noted, "Staff assignments are regularly reviewed to fit the changing needs of the students, staff, and the school. Nan is a valued staff member and her classroom experience will add support to our focus on academic achievement." Principal Becchio continued, "Nan has a heart for our students and our school. For years, Nan has had a huge positive influence on Santa Barbara High School and will continue to do so in whatever capacity she serves our school."
 
"I take great pride in having been the first female athletic director in Santa Barbara High School's history, following in the footsteps of such legendary athletic directors as Clarence Schutte, Mike Moropoulos, and Lito Garcia," Verkaik said.

The Equine Alliance Youth Foundation presents "An Evening of Guitars" Benefit Concert

The Equine Alliance Youth Foundation is presenting "An Evening of Guitars" benefit concert featuring two internationally known groups: Calmenco! and Incendio. All proceeds will benefit underserved youth in San Luis Obispo County.

The Equine Alliance Youth Foundation provides year-round emotional and physical healing services free of charge for undeserved youth throughout San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties using equine-based experiential learning therapies. Our unique equine rescue and rehabilitation programs empower youth and provide an effective behavioral intervention program that engages its participants in their own life improvement process.

Over 2000 young people and their families have benefited from its programs.

Genealogical Society Monthly Meeting, Saturday December 17, 2011

The Santa Barbara County Genealogical Society holds its monthly general
meeting on Saturday, December 17th, at the First Presbyterian Church, 21 E.
Constance at State Street, 9:30 am to 12:00 pm.  Special intersest Groups
meet at 9:30am for Beginning Genealogy, German Ancestry, and Computer
Genealogy and 9:00am for JewishGen.  Featured program starts at 10:30am.

This month’s meeting features a Society favorite- the Members Share
meeting! Three members will share stories of interest found in their
research. Jim Wilson will present Aha! - Uh-oh, which deals with the times
when the thrill of an Aha! moment may not turn out to be quite what is
expected. Bruce McIver shares a fascinating story of one of his ancestors in
Agnes McIver: The Story of a Quarrier's Orphan and Robert Lynn will give a
history of Castle Garden, the precursor of Ellis Island. He will also give
tips on how to research the Castle Garden Website.

This ambitious outreach program will span San Luis Obispo, Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, Salinas, and Monterey television markets. 

 

Cowles California Media’s network of television stations (KCOY/CBS 12, KKFX/ FOX 11, KION/CBS 46, KCBA/ FOC35, KMUV/ TELEMUNDO 23, and Central Coast CW,) is asking non-profit organizations to apply for a portion of the $1 Million Dollars which will be awarded in the form of media grants used for air time, web, organization awareness, promotion, fund raising, specific events and initiatives or even station spons
